Infant Nutrition (0-6 months)

From 0-6 months your baby is rapidly growing and developing. Breastmilk is the natural infant nutrition for babies. Breastmilk contains everything to meet your baby’s nutrition needs, fat, protein, carbohydrates to help your baby grow and develop. It also contains antibodies which help to protect your baby against illnesses and helps to build their immunity in those early months. Breastmilk contains beneficial probiotics that help to colonise your baby’s gut with good bacteria which helps to set up a healthy digestive system from the start. To optimise your infant nutrition it is important to get your breastfeeding nutrition right during this period. What you as a mumma eat while breastfeeding can impact the quality of your breastmilk. Both the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Australian Breastfeeding Association (ABA) recommend exclusive breastfeeding until 6 months of age, meaning no other food or liquid is given to the baby during this time. Breastmilk is the only infant nutrition that a baby needs during those first 6 months.

Breastfeeding is usually achievable for most mothers that want to breastfeed, however for some women it can be a challenging process. Getting the right help with a good lactation consultant during this time can make the transition to breastfeeding easier for a lot of mummas. It is important to note that it can take up to 6 weeks to establish a good breastfeeding routine with your little bub. Some mummas however may choose not to breastfeed for medical or personal reasons. Formula is the next best alternative to breastmilk and will provide your baby with everything he/she needs to grow.

Sunshine Coast Children's Nutritionist: Image of introducing solids to a baby

Baby Nutrition (6-12 months)

Introduction of Solids for Babies

Get ready, it’s time for the introduction of solids for babies!!! From 6 months of age most babies are ready and require the introduction of solid foods. Breastfeeding or formula remains the main source of baby’s nutrition until 12 months of age. However breastfeeding does not provide all the nutrients required to optimise your baby’s nutrition at this time. Your baby rapidly grows and develops from 6-12 months and solid foods give the additional nutrients needed for this growth and development and helps to satisfy your babies appetite. It is important that the baby is introduced to a range of nutritious foods, especially foods that are high in iron to prevent iron deficiency anaemia. A baby nutritionist can help you with the introduction of solids, knowing the signs of readiness, and baby meal and snack ideas and recipes.

Prevent Fussy Eating Babies

Your baby is also learning about food flavours, food textures and developing their food preferences. It is important to introduce your baby to a range of flavours and age appropriate textures (pureed, lumpy and normal finger food textures) during this time. It’s also important to include foods from all of the food groups such as vegetables, fruits, meats, fish, legumes, dairy, breads and cereals in age appropriate forms. This can help your little one to learn to like a variety of foods and flavours which is important to help prevent fussy eating babies. A baby nutritionist can help with fussy eating babies, ensuring your baby’s nutrition needs.

Baby Food Allergy

The development of a baby food allergy is a concern for any parent. Baby food allergy occurs in around 10% of babies. Some babies can also develop food intolerances or food sensitivities to certain foods. A paediatric dietitian can help you identify and remove any problem foods that may be causing reactions in your bub. The elimination of foods from a baby’s diet can greatly impact on your baby’s nutrition. A paediatric dietitian can help you in identifying and managing food allergies, intolerances and chemical sensitivities to ensure you are meeting all your baby’s nutrition needs.

Toddler Nutrition (12-24 months)

Toddler Nutrition is crucial for continuing to set up healthy eating patterns that will see your child well into their adult years. At this point your baby is transitioning to a toddler the way you feed and what you feed your toddler during this period will change. It is important as a parent you offer a variety of nutritious foods during this time to fuel their growth and development and to start establishing healthy eating patterns. Your little one will continue to build upon their food preferences that they started developing in their first year of life.  Your toddler’s eating patterns and attitudes towards food are forming during this time so it is important you do all you can to make sure that you develop nutritious eating habits now. A children’s nutritionist can help you with meal planning and meal and snack ideas and recipes your your little one. If your toddler has any food restrictions such as food allergies, intolerances or is following a vegetarian or vegan diet a children’s nutritionist can assist with meal planning to ensure that your child’s diet is nutritionally adequate.

Dealing with Fussy Eating Toddlers

If you were lucky enough to sail through the first year with your baby eating whatever food you provided, you may get a rude shock when all of a sudden your perfect little eater starts refusing foods. The second year of life can present a whole new range of challenges when it comes to feeding your little one. Fussy eating during this time is very common. It is important that you continue to offer a variety of foods and don’t give up in order to foster those nutritious eating patterns. A children’s nutritionist can help provide you with the strategies you need to deal with fussy eating and problem feeding toddlers.
